Portable Grinding

Portable grinding is that class of grinding in which the grinding machine is actually held in the hands of the operator and where the machine is brought to the workpiece. Raised hub, straight wheels, cones, plugs, mounted wheels, and cups are all used for different portable applications.. The principal operations that are performed with portable grinders are: grinding off fins and parting lines on castings, removing imperfections on castings, grinding down welds and cleaning metal before welding.

Portable grinding machines are usually classified as air (pneumatic) grinders, electric grinders, or flexible shaft grinders in two basic types straight or vertical. On straight portable grinding machines, the grinding is done with the outside diameter of the wheel using either Type 01 straight wheels, Type 16, 17, 18 or 19 cones and plugs, or mounted wheels. On vertical grinding machines, the grinding is done on the side of the face of the wheel using Type 06 straight cups, or Type 11 flaring cups.

Operating speeds range from 6500 to 12,500 SFPM with 9,500 and 12,500 being most common. Type 01 wheels are usualy reinforced with Safety Webs. Grit sizes range from 12 to 46 in Alundum (57A), Crystolon (37C), or NorZon (NZ) abrasives. Grades P through T are most common. Resinoid bonds are mostly used depending on the application and wheel speed.

Portable grinding operations are found mainly in foundries, welding shops, fabrication plants, steel mills, forge shops and shipyard
